HOPS
Conference Call
December 17, 2007

Present:  Barclay, Farley, Frenkel, Friedman, Hughes, Palmer, Persily, Stirling, Watstein

  1. Report to University Librarians via SOPAG re Future of Public Services
Hughes will draft a response to the charge from SOPAG during the week of Dec. 17. We will identify (after those who missed the conference call have a chance to review the decision) the one major theme, but will notify the ULs that a detailed articulation of the ideas and estimation of resources will not be possibly by February 14, 2008.  We will develop this part of the report at the HOPS "retreat" March 6, 12 Noon - March 7, 1pm in Merced.
Preliminary identification of ONE BIG idea:  "Create a common user experience across all campuses through universal access to services and collections."  This seems to resonate with the WorldCat local project as well as HOPS understanding of our user needs.
We will include in the preliminary report (due Feb. 14) an identification of the progress that HOPS is already making on issues related to the ONE BIG idea, i.e. collaborative chat and a pilot for IM service. We will also include the assessment activities that we want to undertake PRIOR to launching into other projects that might move UC libraries closer to this ONE BIG idea.

  2. HOPS Retreat
We propose March 6, 12 Noon- March 7, 1pm as the best time for our HOPS in-person meeting this spring.  Barclay will investigate hotel options and book meeting rooms.  Tours of Merced's campus and facilities will be available the morning of March 6 for those who can arrive early.

  3. Recommendation on 24x7 chat
HOPS will have a conference call on January 22 at 3pm to discuss the recommendation of the DigRef CIG about whether to engage in the OCLC consortium that provides 24x7 chat services.

  4. Mass Digitization FAQ
CDL is still working on the mass digitization FAQ.   HOPS requests that linking to mass digitization items as part of the WorldCat Local pilot be thoroughly evaluated before considering other options to load records into Melvyl or local catalogs.

  5. Congratulations to UCSD on their new webpage!

Next conference call is January 22 at 3pm
