The Report of the Task Force on Electronic Resources (TFER), commissioned
by the UC Heads of Technical Services (HOTS) was sent to the Systemwide
Operations and Planning Action Group (SOPAG) in spring 1998. SOPAG accepted
the cataloging recommendations included in the report and decided:
To these ends, SOPAG has appointed a task force with the following
charge:
Charge to the Electronic Resources Cataloging Task Force 1. Using the TFER Report as a foundation, write guidelines
for the cataloging of internet resources to be used by all University of
California libraries and non-UC contributors to the MELVYL catalog and
periodical databases. Address the following in the guidelines:
2. In writing guidelines, take into account the local system functionality and how this can influence each campus' ability to follow guidelines. Consult with Catalog Dept. Heads and Library Systems staff on each UC campus, as necessary. Take into account MELVYL WEB functionality and how this will influence display of bibliographic and holdings information. Complete guidelines and submit to SOPAG by February 15, 1999 3. Investigate and develop mechanisms for the sharing of bibliographic
records produced by a central cataloging site with all UC campuses for
inclusion in their local online public catalogs. These may include but
are not limited to; batch loading of records, cut-and-paste of selected
fields, development of an ftp site from which library can acquire load
files from the central cataloging site. Address the following in the development
of sharing mechanisms:
Complete investigation of shared cataloging mechanisms and present options to SOPAG by March 1, 1999. 4. Identify costs associated with cataloging and record sharing. Develop cost and compensation models for sharing bibliographic data. Complete cost analysis and suggest funding models by March 1, 1999. Although TFER recommended changes in the display of holdings information in MELVYL for internet resources, the MELVYL architecture is likely to change. Rather than ask you to endorse the TFER display recommendations or to develop new ones, CDL staff under Laine Farley's direction will identify display change options, and Laine Farley will consult broadly with appropriate public services staff to review the proposed displays of electronic holdings. |
