Library Technology Advisory Group
Annual Report - 1999
The Group met twice during the year 1999, once in March and once in
September. The minutes of the meetings are posted on the SOPAG web site,
and are linked from http://libraries.universityofcalifornia.edu/sopag/.
Status of 1999 goals:
-
Develop a proposal for an interim authentication strategy that will facilitate
access to licensed resources, including a time line for implementation
STATUS: CDL-T is negotiating a contract for UC certificate issuance,
and plans to put a UC Certificate Authority into production by February,
2000. CDL-T has developed a proxy server that will facilitate user access
to electronic resources by authenticating requests for those resources
using X.509 certificates.
-
Investigate campus charging and funding models and strategies for library
public-access network ports
STATUS: LTAG has engaged in discussions on the ways public network
ports are funded in each library. All libraries seem to be receiving some
assistance from the campuses, though in different ways and using different
types of resources.
-
Develop a proposal for a collaborative technical approach to providing
access to information on CDROMs
STATUS: LTAG met with Andrea Sevetsen who is the architect of a proposal
for a collaborative approach to managing government resources. The proposal
included a section that related to high-use government-produced CDROMs.
-
Review and participate in the evaluation of Z39.50 as a basis for creating
a union database
STATUS: CDL-T asked the LTAG listserver for participants to engage
in a test of the Z39.50 search interface; 6 institutions participated.
-
Participate in and provide input to CDL-T’s evaluation of ILS vendor systems
STATUS: LTAG will respond to the draft RFP when it is issued early
in 2000, and can be called upon to participate in evaluation of vendor
responses to the RFP if that is desirable.
-
Participate in the development of PIR phase2
STATUS: PIR phase 2 has been discussed, and members of LTAG have volunteered
to collaborate on the development of a patron API to provide real-time
authorization from local patron databases for the use of CDL Request.
-
Explore electronic dissertation issues in consultation with the Joint Steering
Committee on shared Collections and other concerned groups
STATUS: LTAG met with Catherine Ratti to learn the status of the UCB
pilot project with University Microfilms International to develop an electronic
submission process for dissertations, and to provide suggestions on how
the libraries might be involved in an ongoing project.
-
Goal forwarded to LTAG from SOPAG in August 1999 - work with HOTS to develop
a proposal for a series of metadata workshops for technical services staff
STATUS: HOTS and LTAG appointed a Task Group to study and recommend
options, and submitted a proposal to SOPAG in November 1999.
Goals for 2000
-
Respond to the draft RFP for a MELVYL system replacement
-
Assist in the evaluation of bid responses to the RFP
-
Provide ongoing input to implementation of the metadata workshop proposal
-
Continue involvement in the technical aspects of PIR implementation
