State Budget Actions Affecting the UC Libraries' Budgets

The effect of budget cuts on the University libraries depends on allocation decisions made at the local campuses, but some of the budget actions taken by the Governor and the Legislature specifically affect libraries.

  • To address historic shortfalls in budgets for library collections, the state had been providing additional permanent funding of $5 million per year for library materials. This provision has not been funded since 2000–01. Furthermore, a reduction in this program imposed in the 2002–03 state budget will result in a permanent budget cut for libraries of around $5 million.
  • Also in 2002–03, the Governor imposed on the University a mid-year cut of $20 million in "general administration, academic administration, and libraries."
  • The 2003–04 budget includes an additional $16.5 million permanent cut in "general administration, academic administration, and libraries."
