The Gutenberg user interface

Our new content management system is an updated version of WordPress called Gutenberg. The main navigation of the administrative dashboard of the WordPress Gutenberg interface runs along the left-hand side of the page. “Pages” shows the webpages on the site. “Media” shows the files that have been uploaded to the site. (The Drupal interface for the old UC Libraries website placed the main navigation horizontally across the top of the page.)

A major difference between WordPress and Gutenberg appears in the page editing interface. Gutenberg treats content as separate blocks (depending on content type) instead of as a single chunk of content.

The block editor

Unlike the Drupal interface, the WordPress page editor does not have separate tabs for published and new drafts. In WordPress, once you click “Edit Page”, you are creating a new version of the page that will be published after you click the “Update” button.

Click anywhere in the content, and you will see a block toolbar pop up.

Most pages on the UC Libraries website will consist of paragraph, heading, and list blocks. Depending on the block type, the toolbar will display different options.
