Title: Update on the work of the SILS Shared Governance Task Force
Dear colleagues,
The SILS Shared Governance Task Force (SGTF) was charged by the SILS Working Group this past summer to plan and develop SILS governance for the forthcoming migration and implementation phase of work, as well as for ongoing, UC Libraries Advisory Structure (UCLAS) integrated SILS governance. To best carry out its charge, the task force, which is a representative group with members from all campuses, the RLFs and CDL, consulted broadly within the system and with like consortia and institutions.
In the fall, the SGTF defined what is meant by shared governance and developed a set of guiding principles, both of which were endorsed by the SILS Working Group and Council of University Librarians (CoUL). Later this month, the task force will deliver a proposed SILS phase 4 (implementation) shared governance structure, including a governance diagram, charges and work practices. Following SILS Working Group’s review, the structure will be sent to CoUL for their endorsement.
Recently, the nomination/appointment process for the phase 4 Implementation Coordinators and Project Manager Operation Leads was initiated. These two charges were fast-tracked and approved by CoUL in January so that implementation planning work can begin in advance of the official start of phase 4 (currently slated for March). Once CoUL has endorsed the full phase 4 shared governance structure, the Direction and Oversight Committee (DOC) will seek nominees and appointments for the remaining phase 4 cohort positions.
We look forward to sharing the full phase 4 shared governance structure with you once CoUL endorsement is secured (likely closer to the end of this month). We are also happy to share that there will be a DOC-sponsored webinar on SILS shared governance and other SILS topics on March 5th at 2 pm (stay tuned for more information!).
In phase 4, the SGTF will resume and complete their charge with the delivery of both a transition plan and recommendation for ongoing SILS shared governance.
