SILS News – May 04, 2020

Title: SILS vanguard institutions

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to announce the following campuses will be our vanguard institutions:

  • UC Berkeley (including Northern Regional Library Facility)
  • UCLA (including Southern Regional Library Facility)
  • UC Santa Barbara
  • UC San Diego
  • UC San Francisco
  • California Digital Library

The vanguard is a standard phase of migration for Ex Libris consortia. It allows the UC Libraries to test-migrate data from selected institutions into both Institution Zones (one per campus) and a Network Zone (a central collaborative space) before the official migration phase in 2021. With this slate of vanguard campuses, we have a  mix of large and small campuses using different library systems, and an opportunity to include the RLFs and CDL. This will be an excellent learning experience, and the Implementation Coordinator Group looks forward to working with these campuses and Ex Libris on this important phase.

As shared in an earlier SILS News post, the vanguard phase is when a subset of our 10 campuses will carry out a test migration as a proof of concept. The vanguard campuses will not make decisions for the 10 campuses and CDL; rather, the lessons learned from this vanguard phase will be shared broadly and the experience will inform the implementation decisions that we make as a system, during the next phase of work. Key tasks for this phase include:

  • Prepare data for migration (vanguard institutions)
  • Build and test vanguard institution zones and shared network zone
  • Test data load in August 2020
  • Review of test environment, data and policies
  • Share and review lessons learned

The vanguard phase will begin in mid-June and continue through November 2020. The Implementation Coordinator for each vanguard institution will be coordinating activities for their campus.
