Title: SILS phase 3 slogan, mission statement, and slogan!
We’re happy to share that the phase 3 SILS principles are now on the website, along with a SILS mission statement and slogan. The original, phase 2 principles were revised based on feedback from the SILS cohort and the Council of University Librarians (CoUL).
Thank you to the cohort, CoUL, and the Direction and Oversight Committee (DOC) for their review and support of the SILS principles, mission statement, and slogan.
Mission statement: Transform library services and operations through innovation and collaboration.
Slogan: Shaping the future together
Principles and shared assumptions:
- We reaffirm the value of one UC Library Collection. The UC Library Collection is an integrated, shareable, user-centric collection that supports and enhances the mission of the University of California and whose strength is derived from the diverse nature of the individual campus library collections.
- We desire a transformative level of integration of library business processes and workflows, at both the local and systemwide levels, in core functional areas: the circulation, management, and sharing of print, media, and electronic collections.
- We are dedicated to improving the patron user experience by keeping user-centered design in the forefront. We will consider all of our users in their disciplinary and geographic diversity, and we commit to continuously improve interface design in ways that support user tasks and goals.
- We recognize that movement to a next-generation systemwide ILS is fundamental to future collaborations around the development and management of UC library collections and collections-based operations and services.
- We are open to SILS solutions that represent a broad range of potential technical approaches and supplier business models. Our project focuses on the what (the functionality we need), not the how (the implementation of that functionality).
- We see the critical dimensions of this ILS project as not just technical and financial, but also policy harmonization and building and supporting a staff work culture that sustains systemwide efforts.
- We recognize the ongoing efforts of UC Libraries staff throughout this multi-year process. We acknowledge the difficulty of the work and of change itself. We know that transformation involves letting go–of familiarity and mastery of current systems–as we continuously work together to improve the staff experience.
- We emphasize shared practices and policies that are appropriate and effective for the system. Rather than be bound by long-standing individual practices, we seek to collaborate to find new solutions that create success at a system level. We recognize that this project calls on us to be empathetic and flexible in finding common ground. All project participants will strive to balance local interests with systemwide goals.
- We commit to an equitable decision-making process engaging all 11 UC libraries.
- We commit to communications that are transparent and open across the system as we move forward with the project.
- We recognize the technical unsustainability and inherent risks of our present patchwork of library systems as highlighted in the Future of Resource Sharing (April 21, 2017) and Shared Regional Library Facility ILS (June 12, 2017) reports.
- We acknowledge that local campus ILS transitions may need to happen while we explore a systemwide ILS and those do not negate our collective commitment to a shared system.
- We recognize that proceeding with a systemwide ILS will require one-time implementation funding. We expect that the total ongoing contractual cost of a systemwide ILS will be no more than what the campuses and CDL will collectively devote to our independent library systems. We assume that a limited number of staff providing ongoing systemwide support may need to be identified or hired.
