On Friday, Jan. 29, the University of California’s Council of University Librarians (CoUL) formally approved UC Library Search as the patron-facing name for the systemwide integrated library system’s (SILS) discovery platform.
Going forward, UC Library Search will be the only name referenced in end user communication regarding this new UC-wide library discovery service. A mid-February announcement by all 10 campus libraries will introduce the new portal to patrons and reinforce its user-centered integrations.
All other UC library discovery names (e.g., Melvyl, Roger, etc.) will be retired, with these platforms discontinued upon the launch of UC Library Search on July 27, 2021.
The SILS acronym should only be used for internal communications related to the ongoing implementation project.
CoUL’s approval culminates the process during which an end-user naming subgroup thoroughly researched and vetted potential platform names, and put forth UC Library Search as a recommendation to the SILS Working Group.
Upon the Working Group’s endorsement, feedback was solicited from the SILS cohort and SILS News subscribers across the UC system. The overwhelming majority of survey respondents validated UC Library Search as a discovery tool descriptor, while feedback received will be helpful as implementation work continues.
